The Circular Economy
April 9, 2025
The Chamber is excited to see interest in the creation of Canada's first national infrastructure corridor gaining national traction. This concept, which The Saskatoon Chamber introduced at the Canadian Chamber of Commerce’s national AGM, has now emerged as a policy plank in the current federal election and is at the forefront of discussions on economic growth and connectivity.
Improving Competitiveness, Connectivity, and Market Access
A coordinated national infrastructure corridor would strengthen Canada’s economy by facilitating the movement of goods, improving connectivity in rural and remote regions, and reinforcing our status as a global exporter of resources and manufactured goods.
Why This Matters
Canada’s vast geography presents logistical challenges that hinder economic growth. The concept of a national infrastructure corridor first proposed over 50 years ago, offers a strategic solution. A well-planned corridor would:
- Provide rural and remote communities with better access to transportation and transmission grids.
- Improve infrastructure affordability through economies of scale.
- Reduce business costs in key industries, such as mining, where remote operations are significantly more expensive.
- Enhance access to tidewater for Canadian oil and gas producers, addressing costly pipeline delays.
- Streamline environmental assessments by optimizing infrastructure routes and minimizing land conflicts.
What Needs to Happen
We urge the federal government to:
- Fund and support research into establishing a national infrastructure corridor.
- Develop an integrated corridor network to enable efficient market access across all provinces and territories.
- Engage industry stakeholders to refine the business case and implementation strategy.
Stay Engaged
With support for this initiative growing, we are eager to see all federal parties recognize its economic and environmental benefits. We encourage our members to stay informed and advocate for this transformative infrastructure project.
