Saskatoon Chamber Welcomes “Stay the Course” Throne Speech
October 27, 2026
The centre piece of today's Federal Budget: the Productivity Mega Deduction. Businesses that buy eligible depreciable property on or after September 15, 2026, can deduct 100% of its cost in the year it becomes available for use. The share of depreciable assets eligible for immediate expensing rises from about 15% to 65%.
Budget 2026 advances a series of major national strategies that will benefit SK-based industries and expand our capacity to supply the energy and resources the world needs. This includes the “Nuclear Energy Strategy” ($6.5 billion to expand Canada’s nuclear industry and nuclear supply chains, the “Forest Sector Transformation Strategy” ($6.5 billion to modernize forest products facilities and improve competitiveness) and the “Critical Minerals Strategy” ($2.3 billion to promote domestic production and processing capacity).
For our SMB sector, the real gains are cash flow from expensing equipment purchases, less compliance paperwork, and better tax treatment when selling or reinvesting in a business. Small and mid-size owners hoping for lower rates, payroll relief or tariff help didn’t get it.
Our take: a budget loaded with investment incentives but missed opportunities to allow SMB owners to retain more of their earnings to invest in their people, operations and retire debt.
