December 11, 2024Important Update for YXE Businesses: GST Holiday Confusion
December 18, 2024Last week, the Government of Saskatchewan introduced a series of amendments to the Act that business owners and leaders should know about. Some of these are “housekeeping” changes to clarify aspects of the legislation. Other changes are more important, including these ones:
- Limits on when employers can request sick notes, aimed at reducing the administrative burden for employers and the health care system.
- New provisions and time periods for sick leave, maternity leave, interpersonal violence leave and bereavement leave.
- Extended duration of long-term sick leave from 12 to 27 weeks, which will align with federal employment insurance benefits and provide job protection to employees receiving benefits.
- Clarification that an employer does not have to provide vacation pay on the period for which pay-in-lieu of notice is being provided.
Here is a 2-page summary of all the changes prepared by the Province of Saskatchewan. Changes will only take effect when the Act is officially passed in 2025.
