#1 (Really) Big Investments
With 2021 came announcements of permanent mega projects that will generate billions in economic activity and thousands of jobs. New potash mine, updated pulp mill, new sawmills and new ag processing facilities along with bricks and mortar investments that will deliver for decades to come.
#2 Pink Gold
Global prices for potash hit 13-year highs in 2021 and are set for an extended rally into 2022 after the U.S. imposed sanctions on one of the world’s key suppliers in Belarus. Saskatchewan potash will be in high demand – good news for job seekers, local suppliers and community groups.
#3 Boosters, Kits and Kids
COVID boosters, free rapid test kits and vaccines for school-aged kids. There’s now more of these protections than at any point in the pandemic. Through 2020-2021, these essentials were non-existent or limited in quantity. Today, we’re better equipped to handle whatever is ahead.
#4 Recovery on the Runway
Airports are starting to see a return to business and leisure travel now as border restrictions have eased and Saskatoon can receive international flights again. While it will take time to return to pre-2020 levels, recovery is on the runway and preparing for take-off.
#5 Bedrock Business Confidence
In spite of the challenges facing our businesses, many remain optimistic. According to our 2021 “Business Confidence Barometer” survey of Saskatoon and area businesses, 46% expect revenue to increase in 2022 in the 10-29% range. Another 38% are confident they will be able to avoid losses.
