These disruptions are influenced by the complexities of collective bargaining processes, regulatory changes, and incoming federal labor legislation.
While media coverage and political discourse often highlight the impacts on Canada’s international reputation as a reliable trading partner and the financial value of impacted exported cargo, there is a lack of focus on the direct and indirect economic and financial impacts on micro, small, and medium-sized businesses.

Given the recent history of labour disputes in Canada’s critical transportation supply chain, such as the ILWU’s 9-day strike in July 2023, which halted the movement of approximately $800 million worth of cargo per day, it is prudent to monitor potential work stoppages closely. The Vancouver-Fraser Port alone handles $17B worth of Saskatchewan commodities each year, and a total of $65B in western Canada’s trade goes through the port of Vancouver.
