Dear Members of the Standing Policy on Finance:

RE:     Support for the Saskatoon & Region Home Builder’s Association proposal for an audit of Saskatoon’s development levies

On behalf of the Greater Saskatoon Chamber of Commerce, we would like to express our support for the Saskatoon & Region Home Builder’s Association’s proposal to conduct an audit of the City of Saskatoon’s development levies, in order to understand how they are calculated, used and applied.

As noted in the proposal submitted by the Saskatoon & Region Home Builder’s Association, the last known review of the city’s development levies was conducted in 1999. As an organization that works on behalf of local business to ensure long-term competitiveness and continued prosperity, the Chamber agrees that this discussion is long overdue and necessary for ensuring the continued growth of our city. The affordability of housing is a significant factor in attracting new employees and businesses to the city, therefore it is imperative to review the calculations of current development levies and consider ways in which we can move forward in a more transparent and collaborative manner.

We are confident that the Standing Policy Committee on Finance will consider this matter more closely and begin an open discussion on assessing and updating the city’s development levies system.

Kindest regards,

Darla Lindbjerg President & CEO
